Arjuna - Terminalia Arjuna Roxb.
 

It is a known herb for cardiac protection not only in Ayurveda but in folklore medicine in India. In Ayurveda it is classified as ‘Hradya’ which means beneficial for heart. Herbal tea made from bark of Arjuna plant helps to control high blood pressure and strengthens cardiac muscles. It helps to control inflammation, retention of fluids, bleeding and retention of urine in persons suffering from cardiac disorders. Other than cardiac protection formulations it is recommended in Ayurvedic medicine meant for Obesity, Detoxification, Minor skin, Urinary and Respiratory disorders.

 
Amalaki - Emblica Officinalis Linn.
 

Amalaki or Amla as this is called in Ayurveda and Indian folklore is a premier herb of Ayurveda and is known for its excellent medicinal properties. It is a natural source of vital nutrients like Vitamin- C (has 720 mg if it in fruit pulp), Protein- 0.5 %, Fat- 0.5 %, Natural Minerals- 0.7 %, Natural Fiber- 3.4 %, Carbohydrate- 14.1 %, Calcium- 0.05 %, Phosphorus- 0.02 %, Iron- 1.2 %, Nicotinic acid- 0.2% and many more micronutrients. It is called a ‘Rasayana’ herb in Ayurveda which means the herb with rejuvenating and revitalizing properties. It is a principal ingredient of the famous rejuvenating formulation ‘Chyavanprasha’.

 
Ashvagandha - Withania Somnifera (Linn.) Dunal.
 

In Ayurvedic system of medicine Ashvagandha is classified as ‘Rasayana’ herb. In western world this is called ‘Indian Ginseng’ due to its properties similar to that of Ginseng. In Ayurveda it is used for Revitalization, Rejuvenation and for Aphrodisiac effect. It is included in formulations for arthritis, general weakness, spermatogenesis, loss of appetite, chronic cough, urinary disorders and chronic diseases of respiratory system.

 
Brahmi - Bacopa Monnieri Pennel (Linn.)
 

It is called ‘Medhya’ which means beneficial for brain. It helps to control anxiety, insanity, epilepsy, sleep disorders, mood swings and improves learning process in children. It is used in Ayurvedic formulations for skin diseases, detoxification and urinary diseases of both the sex. It is widely used in Ayurveda in formulations meant for indigestion, constipation, cardiac weakness, disorders of female genital organs and infertility in both the sexes.

 
Ghritkumari - Aloe Vera Tourn. ex Linn
 

Ghritkumari is used internally in Ayurvedic formulations for blood purification, inflammation, skin disorders and constipation and also to control enlargement of liver and spleen. Pulp of Aloe vera is used in a large number of cosmetic formulations meant for various conditions like wrinkles, sunburn and hyper-pigmentation of skin. The fresh pulp of Ghritkumari is used in Indian folklore for conditions like general debility due to ageing.

 
Giloe - Tinospora Cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook
 

This is the most commonly used herb of Ayurveda. It is a ‘Rasayana’ and has excellent immuno-modulating properties. It is widely used in Ayurvedic formulations for general debility, detoxification, chronic fever, Chronic cough, diabetes, oligospermia, chronic skin diseases and allergic disorders. It is also effective against diseases of alimentary system like: excessive thirst, nausea, indigestion, Liver disorders, hyperacidity, amoebiasis and worm infestations.

 
Gokshur- Tribulus Terrestris Linn
 

Gokhru is used mainly in Ayurvedic formulations for ‘Vata’ disorders, cough, general debility, kidney stones, urinary disorders, piles and constipation. It is indicated in Ayurveda for weakness due to aging, cardiac protection, inflammatory disorders, neurological weakness, indigestion and female disorders like threatened abortion and uterine support.

 
Haritaki - Terminalia Chebula Retz
 

Harad is a ‘Rasayana’ herb and is part of the famous Ayurvedic formulation ‘Triphala’. It is mainly used in Ayurvedic formulations for digestive system. It is also used in Ayurvedic formulations for inflammatory disorders, chronic fever and chronic skin diseases. It helps to control nervine disorders, pain and inflammations of various origins, mental weakness, uterine inflammations, throat inflammations, chronic cough and allergic disorders of skin.

 
Karela - Momordia Charantia Linn
 

Bitter gourd or Karela is used in Ayurveda for various applications ranging from blood purification to liver care and diabetes. It helps to control digestive disorders like- indigestion, dyspepsia, liver dysfunction, constipation, piles and worm infestations. It a herb of choice in treatment for detoxification, inflammatory disorders, respiratory discomfort and fever. It is used in formulations for allergic disorders of skin, food poisoning and obesity.

 
Madhuyashti - Glycyrrhiza Glabra Linn
 

Yashtimadhu or Liquorice is mainly used in Ayurvedic formulations for Respiratory disorders like minor to chronic coughs, sore throat, Breathing difficulty and gastric disorders like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, abdominal distension, hyper acidity and peptic ulcer. In western countries candies made from extract of Liquorice are helpful in soothing sore throat, irritating cough, allergic seasonal cough and cold and chest congestion. This is described as a ‘Rasayana’ herb in Ayurveda because helps to control weakness due to chronic illness, memory loss, immunological imbalance and aging. Maduyashti is a popular ingredient of Hair oils meant for falling, thinning and premature graying of hair. It is used in Ayurveda for hyper pigmentation of skin, minor itching and other seasonal allergic skin diseases.

 
Methi - Trigonella Foenum-Graecum Linn
 

Fenugreek is used in Ayurveda for ‘Vata’ disorders like arthritis, body ache and weakness of nerve tissues, inflammations, acute joint pains and gastric disorders. It is used in Ayurvedic medicines meant for indigestion, flatulence and to improve milk production in lactating mothers. The use of seed powder of Methi is popular in Indian folklore for giving relief from pain and stiffness of joints in arthritis patients, general weakness in elders especially in winters and to control side effects in diabetics.

 
Shankhpushpi – Convolvulus Pluricaulis Chois
 

It is called a ‘Medhya’ herb which means beneficial for brain in Ayurvedic system of medicine. It has ‘Rasayana’ properties also which makes it very important for inclusion in formulations meant for general weakness of body and where involvement of brain function is also affected due to lack of agility. It helps to improve digestion, breathing difficulty, spermatogenesis, sleep disorders and disorders due to weakness of female genital system especially uterine muscles.

 
Shatavari- Asparagus Racemosus Willd
 

Shatavari is a ‘Rasayana’ herb, as per Ayurvedic texts it helps to support mental weakness, muscular weakness, male genital dysfunction and helps to improve lactation on feeding mothers. It helps to improve muscle mass in underweight persons, spermatogenesis, irregular menstruation and burning micturation. In Ayurveda it is included in formulations for improvement of vision.

 
Shilajit – Asphaltum
 

Shilajit is a natural source of micronutrients required for running of our body and to repair wear and tear happening in to-days stressful life. It is a ‘Rasayana’ supplement and is part of numerous formulations ranging from diabetes, osteoporosis, general debility due to aging and due to weakness after prolong illnesses. It is included in many formulations meant to get aphrodisiac effect.
